The Ionian Islands are situated in the Ionian Sea and lie south of the Adriatic between mainland Greece and Italy. In Greek mythology, the name Ionian comes from Io, one of Zeus’ lovers who, escaping the wrath of a jealous Hera, sister to Zeus and the goddess of marriage, passed through what is now called the Ionian Sea.
In Greek the islands are called “Eftanisa” meaning “Seven Isles”. Each one has its own unique character and an enviable balance of natural beauty and rich, cultural history. They are the greenest islands in Greece and boast lush vegetation, idyllic beaches, delicious local cuisine, and unspoilt villages where centuries-old customs still hold sway. The Ionian Islands also display strong Mediterranean and British influences compared to other parts of Greece.
