Greek Island – Crete
There are so many options for weddings in Crete that there is something for every couple. From a simple ceremony outside a traditional Greek chapel to an extravagant five star hotel ceremony and reception, weddings in Crete are truly memorable. Your Crete wedding can also take place on a beach, by a beautiful lake or at a hotel or villa of your choice within certain municipalities. Or for something truly unique, why not get married by a Cretan temple built in the style of the ancient Greeks…You can also get married on the historic island of Spinalonga, famous from Victoria Hislop’s novel “The Island”.
Crete as your wedding destination
Greek Weddings in Crete are more spectacular than anywhere else in Greece. The “big fat Greek wedding” takes on new meaning here; it is not uncommon to have 2000 or more guests at a wedding in Crete!
Crete is the southernmost island in the Mediterranean and the largest island in Greece – both in size (8,261 square km) and character. It offers more attractions than any other Greek island and really does have something for everyone – ancient archaeology, spectacular beaches, Venetian towns, unusual wildlife, dramatic scenery, delicious food and its unique type of music.
Crete is the home of the Minoan civilisation, the oldest form of civilisation in Europe and offers world famous archaeological sites such as Knossos, Phaistos and Gortis.
Crete was ruled by Venetians for more than 4 centuries and the historic coastal towns of Rethymno and Chania bear a remarkable similarity to Venice. For beach lovers there are 1,000 km of coastline to explore from secluded coves to large stretches of sand, and the resorts range from the exclusive VIP favourite of Elounda to the party atmosphere in Malia, and everything in between.
The scenery is dominated by huge mountain ranges, dramatic gorges (such as the world famous Samaria Gorge) and expanses of wildflowers, olive groves and aromatic herbs. There are many wildlife, plants and flowers that are unique to the island such as the endangered Kri-Kri wild goat.
Those who venture inland will be rewarded by glimpsing a more traditional way of life where the locals live in charming stone hamlets alongside working donkeys and goat herds. Crete is also the home of famous painter El Greco and Nikos Kazantzakis, the author of Zorba the Greek, the mythical Minotaur in Knossos and Spinaloga, the former leper colony which inspired British author Victoria Hislop to write her bestselling novel, The Island.

Sam & Wayne, Hersonissos chapel and Taverna, Crete, 16th August 2016
I just wanted to thank Ionian weddings for making something I expected to be stressful run so perfectly. I always dreamed of a Greek mamma Mia wedding but my wedding exceeded my dre ams it w as perfect. Everyone who attended were amazed and thought I was wonderful to organise it so well when actually I had no stress at all. A five star service. I couldn’t be happier with the service I received from both in England and in Crete. The taverna was first class and the food perfect. The wedding chapel was beautiful and the whole day was made even more perfect by the wonderful local people who gave me so much attention, I really felt like a princess!!
Justyna & Pawel, Creta Palace Wedding and Reception, Crete, 10th July 2015
Many thanks for your lovely wishes! We had a lovely wedding and great memories. The decoration looked lovely and Crete Palace was a perfect venue for romantic setting, we’re very pleased with the staff and impressed by their hospitality.
Special thanks as well to the on island coordinators – they were really helpful and have managed to sort out for officer from mayor hall to come to the beach to perform the civil wedding there instead in the town hall which we really wanted. We were impressed by how quickly they were able to reorganize it for us. They were very friendly and fun to be around and made sure that everything went smoothly. The make up artist/hairdresser – was amazing and I was really pleased with her professional services.
We wish you a lovely summer and all the best in the future.

Andreas was efficient and easy to talk to; he always answered queries and questions I raised. Our coordinator in Crete was absolutely wonderful! They couldn’t have been more helpful; they made everything really relaxed which is exactly what we wanted.
I would recommend Ionian Weddings to absolutely everyone. They take the stress and uncertainty out of getting married overseas. The whole process was a dream and once we were in the resort the wedding coordinator made us feel like a family friend.
